Welcome to Medley of Marissa!

Hello and welcome to my blog! I am Marissa. Thank you for stopping in to check it out. I have so many things to say, mostly about a super specific topic so if you are here, I hope you are interested in hearing what I have to say about what it’s like to be in a leadership position working in aquatics. If you aren’t then you might be in the wrong place…

I LOOOOOVE water. I love being in it, I love being around it and I love drinking it. I grew up with a pool, swimming for fun and did not begin swimming competitively until I was much older. I sorta feel like I stumbled into the world of aquatics because sometimes I find myself asking how I got here. I life guarded and taught swim lessons at a pool right out of high school. After that I coached for a club team for a year before finding my place as an instructor at a privately owned, indoor, year round swim school.

I have been at the same swim school for the last 7ish years. I am now the Aquatic Training Coordinator and Strokes Department Head for that swim school. Oddly enough I have found so much more joy in teaching swim than I ever did in swimming myself.

I love to be in water but I prefer it to be chlorinated(I think there are some pretty freaky things in the ocean or in any water I can’t see the bottom of) I have a huge Mexican American family so when I am not at work it is almost always someone’s birthday, bbq, wedding or whatever. I have a trillion cousins so maybe some of them will pop in and read this, but I know for sure my mom will (Hi Mom!) I love to cook and to eat but I hate to clean the kitchen afterward. I love to read on my kindle and listen to audiobooks while I drive and I have the most eclectic taste in music of anyone I have ever met. Seriously ask my boyfriend or my friends(I’m looking at you, Dennis), they hate it. I have an antisocial dog named Mali who hates water but I love her anyway.

I have met some of the most important people in my life, a few amazing friends, my mentor, and my boyfriend of 5 years, through working in aquatics. It has been a huge part of my life. This blog is a big deal to me because I will be sharing my thoughts and techniques with whoever is interested. The majority of my posts will be about stroke technique, drills, water safety, and interactions with kids, but there might be some other bits of me mixed in as well, a Medley of Marissa you might say…. Next up on the blog will be my personal teaching style so be on the lookout for that post!
